What Is GVWR? How Vehicle Weight Rating Unlocks Bigger Tax Deductions

GVWR stands for Gross Vehicle Weight Rating: the maximum total weight a vehicle is rated to safely carry, including the vehicle itself plus passengers, cargo, and fuel. It is set by the manufacturer — and for tax purposes, it is the single number that determines how much of your business vehicle you can write off in Year 1.

Where to find your GVWR

  1. Open the driver's door and look at the certification label on the door jamb (the B-pillar).
  2. Find the line labeled "GVWR" — it is listed in pounds (and kilograms).
  3. It is also printed in the owner's manual under specifications.

Use the manufacturer's rated number, not a scale weight. The IRS goes by the label.

Why 6,000 lbs is the magic number

GVWRTax treatment
Under 6,000 lbsPassenger-car luxury depreciation limits apply (small annual caps)
Over 6,000 lbs (SUV)$32,000 Section 179 cap, remainder via 100% bonus depreciation
Over 6,000 lbs (pickup w/ 6-ft+ bed or cargo van)100% Section 179 expensing — no SUV cap

That is why two vehicles with similar price tags can produce wildly different deductions: a 5,800-lb crossover is stuck with luxury limits, while a 6,200-lb SUV can be fully written off in Year 1.
